Position: Social and Behavior Change Communication Director

Currently, we are seeking suitably qualified candidates to fill the Social and Behavior Change Communication Director for the USAID-funded Community Health and Nutrition Project.

The Community Health and Nutrition Project (CHN) aims to improve the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and children under the age of two by achieving measurable improvements in maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and postpartum family planning (PPFP) behaviors. It also works to help the Government of Jordan (GOJ) respond to immediate risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) and social and behavior change (SBCC) needs related to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Job Summary:

The Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Director is a senior level position. S/He leads two major components on the Community Health and Nutrition Project: (1) The Social Behavior and Change Component and the (2) COVID19 Component. S/he serves as the main point of contact for CHN on COVID-19 and all SBCC related work with USAID/Jordan, the Ministry of Health, other Government of Jordan counterparts, international donors, and local partners. The Social and Behavior Change Communication Director provides technical leadership, strategic guidance, and oversight for the technical areas of the project listed above and is a member of the senior management team.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Serve on the senior management team that directs the high- level implementation of CHN and ensures the project meets its deliverables and commitments to the client.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight in the planning and implementation of SBCC and COVID-19 communication activities across the project.
  • Lead CHN’s SBCC strategy development and roll out on Maternal, Young Children and Infant Child Nutrition and Post-Partum Family Planning (MIYCN-PPFP).
  • Oversee development of SBCC budget, related tools, and materials.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of SBCC related research and monitoring, evaluation and learning activities.
  • Monitor Intermediate Result 1 progress to ensure consistency and coherence across interventions and with other major in-country actors
  • Collaborate closely with the project component leads to ensure coherence and delivery of maximum impact.
  • Collaborate closely with external stakeholders, including the Jordanian government, multilateral organizations, and the private sector.
  • Supervise and build the technical capacity of the CHN- SBCC team as well as the local partner Royal Health Awareness Society and other local partners as needed.
  • Ensure that CHN SBCC activities meet quality standards and are in line with the latest SBCC practices and approaches.
  • Direct the Royal Health Awareness Society’s portfolio and staff on CHN.
  • Oversee the technical implementation of large contracts and grants related to communication, media, and community outreach activities.
  • Manage the COVID-19 portfolio across Intermediate Result 1 and 3 of CHN.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of large national mid and mass media campaigns.

Qualifications:

The successful individual is required to meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Master’s degree or its international equivalent in a relevant technical area, such as Social and Behavior Change Communication, Social Marketing, Public Health, Health Communication, Health Promotion, Social Sciences, or any relevant academic areas.
  • At least 7 years’ of progressively increasing technical responsibility leading to a senior level of expertise in SBCC.
  • Demonstrated understanding of a range of SBCC approaches that address change in social norms, structures, and individual behaviors.
  • Strong understanding of local cultural practices, social networks, and gender and age dynamics strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of public health issues in the following areas strongly preferred: Maternal, Infant and Young Children Nutrition (MIYCN), Family Planning, Reproductive Health, Maternal and Child Health.
  • Experience working on USAID funded project or other International Programs preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal Arabic and English communication skills.
  • Strong intercultural supervisory and team building skills and experience.
  • Ability to work independently with initiative to manage high volume workflow; and
  • Relevant computer software skills (including, at a minimum, the standard applications in MS Office).
  • Technical expertise in research analysis and application is plus.
