Médecins Sans Frontières is running a reconstructive surgery program in Amman, which opened in 2006, is giving access to reconstructive surgery (orthopedic, plastic and maxillo-facial) to war wounded people providing comprehensive health cares, MSF aims at identifying and referring patients from neighboring countries (Iraq, Yemen, Syria, and other countries with conflicts) then ensuring their medical follow-up after discharge.
Médecins Sans Frontières Reconstructive Surgery program in Amman and is seeking (1) Surgical assistant – Orthopedic Surgery.
DIMENSON OF THE PROJECT:
- Reconstructive Surgery Hospital with in average 550 admissions per year,
- over 1000 surgeries annually,
- 72 surgical beds and 126 rehabilitation beds,
- 2 OTs for orthopaedic, maxillo-facial and plastic surgeries,
- OPD with in average 550 consultations / month
- physiotherapy and psychosocial department, and a micro laboratory within the hospital
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To assist the orthopedic surgeons in their examination, preparation, operation and follow up of RSH patients in the OPD, IPD and in the OT
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient assessment and follow-up in OPD
The orthopedic surgical assistant supports the orthopedic specialists in the following activities, mostly performed in OPD:
- Informing the patient about his condition and explaining the treatment
- Identifying need for patient’s education and requesting or providing education
- Documenting all consultations in EMR
- Providing timely and regular follow up of patients
Peri-operative period
- Ensuring proper preparation of patients before the surgery, in collaboration with ortho specialists and nursing team
- Assisting the orthopedics specialists during the surgery
- Documenting in EMR the surgical intervention under direct supervision from the ortho specialists
- Following MSF Infection Control guidelines
Post-operative follow-up of inpatients
- Participating in weekly surgical rounds with the orthopedic specialists – with proper EMR documentation
- Performing and EMR documenting IPD visit of recently operated patients
- Attending any surgical complaint in the ward after initial assessment by Ward MD
- Supporting IPD nursing team for complex dressings
Coverage of orthopedic specialists during their leave
- During the leave or absence of orthopedic specialists, the ortho surgical assistant covers the absence and ensures continuity of follow-up.
Additional activities which can be requested upon need
- In case of emergency, can be called to attend emergency surgery with the orthopedic specialist
- Participates in reporting related to surgical activity (including Sitreps and other regular reports)
- Participates in regular meetings gathering the medical and surgical team.
- Collects data and can be asked to participate in ongoing research studies
REQUIREMENETS:
Education & Training:
- Required: Medical Doctor diploma or degree.
- Residency in orthopedic surgery is required. Board certification in orthopedic surgery is not mandatory.
- Required: holds the Jordanian MOH License and JMA registration.
- Required, 2-5 year of experience in a surgical ward specialized in orthopedic surgery
- Required, Written and verbal fluency in English and Arabic.
- Essential computer literacy.
Personal abilities and qualities:
- Must be legally authorized to work in Jordan.
- Demonstrates multi-cultural flexibility.
- Proven communication and interpersonal skills.
Contract
- Full-time position 100%
- 6 months fixed-term Jordanian contract, renewable.
- Position based in Amman
- Ideal start date: July 2023
