Nutrition Counselor SRF # 304
Reports to: Senior Nutrition Officer
Location: Azraq Camp and Zaatari camp, Jordan
Job Summary:
The Nutrition Counselor will be responsible for the implementation of Nutrition-focused Social and Behavioral Change Communication (nutrition-specific SBCC) activities targeted to Pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and their key influential members within Azraq Camp and Zaatari camp, through awareness, support, and follow-up communication messages.
She will raise the awareness of the target group on maternal nutrition, contribute
to improving women’s dietary habits during pregnancy and lactation, promote and support breastfeeding and optimal infant and young child feeding for mothers and children and minimize the risks of artificial feeding in the emergency context in accordance wit h agency policy and/or the Operational Guidance on MIYCN in any required work location.
Scope of Work:
Technical:
– Assess PLWs to identify nutrition-specific SBCC needs.
– Assess the knowledge of the beneficiaries before and after counselling sessions and group sessions.
– Provide tailored one-on-one counseling sessions to PLWs and key influencers, in line with needs discovered in initial assessments, offering practical advice and education on key nutritional issues
– Provide group sessions and one-on-one counseling for Pregnant and lactating women on maternal nutrition, and early initiation of breastfeeding.
– Identify PLWs at higher risk of poor nutrition and new or inexperience mothers for more
– intensive counselling support
– Identify PLW’s key influencers who influence decisions about PLW’s diets, to be invited and to participate in influencers group sessions on supporting PLW’s in eating a diverse and balanced diet during pregnancy and lactation.
– Ensure all mothers/caregivers are aware of the importance of the early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months
– Educate the mothers on the quality, quantity, and frequency of meals to promote adequate weight gain during pregnancy and meet their daily nutritional requirements during pregnancy and lactation
– Educate PLW on food safety and hygiene
– Discourage unhealthy eating habits; consumption of tea, coffee, instant noodles.etc.
– Utilize Communication and Branding Guidelines in the day-to-day implementation of integrated project communication activities and results-oriented interventions, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to set guidelines
– Co-ordinate the concept testing and pre-testing of all communication materials that are developed
– Provide pregnant women with preparatory counseling for breastfeeding and colostrum feeding, to prevent pre-lacteal feeds and bottle feeding;
– Counsel the mothers on correct maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation;
– Deliver messages on MIYCN practices with focus on maternal nutrition to the targeted community/communities through group education sessions;
– Ensure systematic screening for acute malnutrition among pregnant and lactating women, and children 6-59 months.
– Ensure that all malnourished PLW and children are referred appropriately for nutrition support to (SFP/OTP)
– Link with referral routes in the camp to facilitate PLW referral to receive ANC and PNC services
– Through liaison with the nutrition volunteers, provide effective follow up of all cases – particularly:
– Ensure PLWs and key influencers are reached with rapid assessments on timely manner.
– Ensure the prompt tracing of PLWs and key influencers who are absent from the sessions
– Request specific PLWs to be followed up as required
– Arrange for group sessions activities: time, location, supplies, materials and invitations.
– Implement ongoing didactic and on-job training activities targeting the nutrition volunteers to build their capacity and enhance program services and practices
– Ensure systematic disaggregated age/gender data and PLW’s (pregnant, lactating) are recorded correctly and timely reported using standard program reporting tool.
– Maintain proper communication with PLWs and key influencers
– Maintain good connection with reproductive healthcare providers, protection, mental health, disability support and WASH routes in the camp to support potential crosscutting needs.
– To support medical nutrition therapy to PLWs of chronic conditions whenever needed
– Support in arranging food demonstration sessions for the beneficiaries in collaboration with nutrition trainers, nutrition volunteers, and women support groups
– Contribute to the development and distribution of contextually appropriate IEC/SBCC materials on maternal nutrition
Reporting and Advocacy:
– Maintain daily records of pregnant, lactating, and key influencers attending group sessions and/ or counselling sessions to be reflected on the system to MEAL on daily basis.
– Submit comprehensive periodic, and ad hoc relevant statistical reports and data required by the nutrition officers and senior nutrition officer on timely manner
– Submit weekly and monthly reporting of activities to the nutrition officers and senior nutrition officer MEAL on timely manner
– Compile and filter weekly rapid assessments from nutrition volunteers and report on weekly basis to nutrition officers and MEAL
– Play an active role in advocacy to promote proper MIYCN Practices, antenatal and post-natal checkups, importance of institutional deliveries, vaccination and growth monitoring
– Support in the documentation of project case studies, lessons learnt, advocacy campaigns and project reporting.
Referral and Coordination:
– Maintain strong coordination with medical staff to support medical nutrition therapy for chronic conditions if needed.
– Refer PLWs and/or children for intensive nutritional/medical care as required
– Ensure caregivers are aware of available services and advocate prioritization for caregivers, where necessary, in appropriate services and support
– Refer all pregnant women to the next antenatal care services if not already informed
– Refer cases for community follow – ups to community nutrition volunteers.
– Refer to other services in the camp (Reproductive health, Disabilities, Protection and WASH);
– Coordinate with all health practitioners, nutrition trainer, nutrition counselors, nutrition volunteers in relevant clinic/location to ensure that all pregnant and lactating mothers are referred to CMAM/MIYCN services
– Receive cases referred from the reproductive health, community health and other actors in the camp and manage cases appropriately
Additional Tasks:
– Participate in other MIYCN program duties as requested
– Ensure a comfortable, calm, environment for counseling sessions and group sessions and maintain good relationships with the beneficiaries

Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s Degree of Human Nutrition and dietetics / clinical nutrition.
– Experienced nutritionist with proven experience in carrying out SBCC and close engagement and communication with communities
