UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Office (MENARO) is seeking the services of committed professional Writers/Editors to render their services to MENARO at short notice.

For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

UNICEF Middle East and North Africa Regional Office (MENARO) regularly produces documents of significance, such as: Country Program Documents (CPDs), reports, including COVID 19 reports and studies, strategies, plans, advocacy briefs, position papers, guidelines, case studies, communications materials, etc.

UNICEF publications and documents must meet a high-quality standard with respect to their content, style and quality of writing both in English.

In order to meet these standards, MENARO intends to set up a stand-by arrangement through the present recruitment of writers/editors for the English language.

Scope of Work:

The contract will specifically include the following services:

  • Copy editing and copy writing of technical documents, including related to COVID-19;
  • Writing of documents/advocacy briefs based on reports, studies and notes, including related to COVID-19 and post-epidemic papers provided by UNICEF
  • Proof-reading, writing and editing original copy and content on UNICEF-related activities and programme, including related to COVID-19 such as:
  • CPDs, strategy notes/programme rationales, reports and publications, including annual corporate reports, brochures, meeting reports etc.
  • Strategies, plans, guidelines and case studies
  • Key messages, briefs, position papers
  • Others as required

The contract will not extend to production and editing of communications materials such as press releases, media advisories, etc.

Deliverables and Schedules

The assignment will involve writing, editing and formatting of documents for review and final clearance by the supervisor of the consultancy. This includes compliance with the UNICEF style and branding guidelines, grammatical accuracy, factual accuracy and coherence.

The specific scope, quality criteria, and estimated number of days and/or half-days required for each assignment requested of the consultant under the consultancy contract will be discussed and agreed in writing before the assignment is initiated.

Work will be assigned to the consultants on an as needed basis.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Completion of an advanced university degree, in social sciences, law, humanities, public health, social work, public administration, communications, international relations or a related field.
  • At least 10 years’ experience writing/editing professional and/or academic documents related to the above fields of advanced university study.
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or knowledge of UNICEF and the United Nations.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Duty Station

Remote Based

Duration:

11.5 months

Travel:

This is a remote consultancy. Should “mission travel” be required, UNICEF will manage and pay for travel via Travel Authorization. However, this will be subject to the following prerequisites: Medical Clearance, Security Clearance through the Travel Request Information Process (TRIP) system, the Basic and Advanced Security in the Field Trainings, Travel Visa, and liability waiver. The consultant/individual contractor is responsible for arranging his/her own travel and submit invoices to UNICEF for payment as part of the contract.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the consultant’s service. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to starting his/her work.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
