Scope of Work
The Nutrition Trainer will be a field expert with a solid background on community nutrition to support camps communities in Jordan. The trainer will be responsible for IYCF with a focus on nutrition outreach and improving the nutritional status of the community through establishing mother to mother support groups on community level and, the trainer shall ensure delivery of the highest standards on nutritional care as per Jordanian MOH’ endorsed Nutrition Guidelines. Also, to provide tailored one to one counseling sessions at clinics. Also, to deliver optimal care to girls and boys under the age of 5 and pregnant/lactating women, those with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), and Severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The trainer shall perform the following duties as listed below:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
– Develop criteria and establish mother to mother support group and nutrition committees.
– Training and mentoring lead mother groups on IYCF key messages.
– Developing IYCF key messages and finalizing it after getting inputs from the technical supervisors.
– To promote positive Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Practices in the community.
– Designing IEC materials on nutrition and IYCF in specific.
– Designing and disseminating messages to address the sharing of the therapeutic food by healthy children in order to minimize the sharing of therapeutic food.
– Educate the child caregivers on the food preparation procedure through food demonstrations.
– Promote appropriate household level on complementary and weaning foods preparation.
– Support in identifying training needs and implement ongoing didactic and on-job training activities targeting health care providers to enhance the integration of IYCF/CMAM services within the health system
– Integrate cross cutting issues that have an impact on nutrition such as sanitation and hygiene.
– Provide tailored one-on-one counseling sessions to mothers, in line with needs discovered in initial assessments, offering practical advice and education on key IYCF issues;
– Ensure systematic screening for acute malnutrition among all children under the age of 5 and pregnant/lactating women
– Ensure that all malnourished children are timely reached and referred for nutrition support to (SFP/OTP)
– Ensure that anthropometric measurements are recorded and monitored correctly.
– Link with referral routes in the camp to facilitate SAM/MAM children with medical complications’ referral to receive proper medical treatment at the secondary level.
– Ensure that National CMAM Guidelines are followed and implemented in the management of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) girls and boys.
– Ensure that nutrition products (RUTF, RUSF) following the National CMAM Guidelines are given to the patient according to his/her nutritional status
– Maintain strong coordination with medical staff to support medical nutrition therapy for chronic conditions if needed.
– Ensure systematic disaggregated age/gender data on malnourished girls and boys and PLW’s are recorded correctly and timely reported using standard program reporting tool.
– Maintain proper communication with care givers of girls and boys enrolled in the program
– Maintain good connection with protection, mental health, disability support and WASH routes in the camp to support potential crosscutting needs.
– Support nutrition counsellors by counselling pregnant and lactating women on maternal nutrition and different IYCF topics.
– To support medical nutrition therapy to patients of chronic conditions whenever needed
– Reach out to malnourished children in their caravans/shelters whenever needed.
– Coordinate with all health practitioners and nutrition volunteers in relevant districts to ensure that all pregnant and lactating mothers are referred to IYCF services; CMAM/IYCF locations.
– Facilitate periodic training (per quarter) to affiliating nutrition volunteers to identify and refer mothers and children in need for IYCF services.
– Provide refresher training on different nutrition topics to the focal points of other partners working in the camp
– Receive cases referred from community volunteers, healthcare providers and other actors in the camp and manage cases appropriately.
– Provide BF assessment and counseling (using full assessment form and other relevant reporting tools).
– Train women in their third trimester on proper child positioning, early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding.
– Provide one-on-one breastfeeding counseling for mothers experiencing difficulties in breastfeeding including supporting re-lactation
– Provide tailored one-on-one counseling sessions to mothers, in line with needs discovered in initial assessments, offering practical advice and education on key IYCF issues.
– Respond to any concerns or local taboos associated with breastfeeding.
– Ensure all mothers/caregivers are aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months
– Provide appropriate counseling and ensure support is provided to caregivers of targeted infants who have no possibility to be breastfed.
– Counsel mothers on the appropriate time to introduce complementary feeding, and the benefits of continued breastfeeding and respond to any concerns or local taboos associated with complementary feeding.
– Educate the mothers on the quality, quantity and frequency of complementary feeds to promote adequate weight gain.
– Refer cases for community follow – ups to community nutrition volunteers.
– Visit cases if needed.
– Compile and filter weekly rapid assessments from community nutrition volunteers and report on weekly basis to IYCF officer.
– Refer to other services in the camp (Disabilities, Protection and WASH)

– Nutrition training manual for mother support groups developed
– Annual target of mother groups formed and trained on improved nutrition practices and IYCF.
