Overview

The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BMET) shall provide oversight of Medical Maintenance Operations and provide clinical and administrative support for all matters and concerns relating to the lifecycle management of medical equipment. Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist shall perform all activities related to repair, calibration, modification and overhaul of medical equipment as well as support USAMMC-SWA to include Forward Logistical Elements and Forward Distribution Teams.

Responsibilities

  • The following job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and essential duties and responsibilities of work performed by employees within this classification. It may not contain a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and qualifications required of employees to perform this job.
  • Provide biomedical support which requires the application of engineering and mechanical concepts and methodology to provide lifecycle management and technical support of diagnostic, therapeutic devices, monitoring, and other equipment utilized in the practice of medicine, and to improve clinical care.
  • Utilize automation systems such as, but not limited to, TEWLS, Logistics Modernization Program (LMP) Army Enterprise Systems Integration Program (AESIP), Global Combat Support System – Army (GCSS-A), Depot Standard System (DSS) and Logistics Information Warehouse (LIW).
  • Perform maintenance on medical equipment. This includes but not limited to, repair, calibration, preventive maintenance, scheduled parts replacements, inspections, technical evaluations, quality control and quality assurances, modifications, acceptance inspections, installations, de-installations, updates, and safety and function testing.
  • Perform all maintenance and repair in accordance with the manufacturer’s literature or technical bulletins. May be required to perform repairs and calibrations of the highest complexity.
  • Use automated system to input and document all maintenance performed and time spent on medical equipment. Maintain timecard; capture productive, non-productive, direct and indirect labor within the approved maintenance management system.
  • Research all repair parts and provide quotes from source. Process repair parts by submitting a new items request (NIR) for the repair part quote.
  • The BMET shall inspect all newly acquired medical devices or found on installation medical devices for safety and function and attach certification label to equipment. Follow guidelines explained in TB 38-750-2 (Maintenance Management Procedures for Medical Equipment) when completing forms and labeling.
  • The Contractor shall provide training and guidance to clinical, research, and technical staff on the safe use, operation, and operator level maintenance of medical equipment. Assess historical maintenance issue affecting supported facilities and make recommendations to Chief of Clinical Engineering for potential solutions.
  • Provide training and guidance to other biomedical equipment technicians on testing, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of medical equipment. Serve as a technical resource to other supported customers with organic biomedical equipment technicians.
  • Perform lifecycle management of all medical systems such as imaging, life support, and monitoring to include physical and network support.
  • Maintains functional knowledge of relevant safety codes and standards of regulatory bodies.
  • Documents all work performed in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Applies basic networking principles to resolve medical system communication issues including, but not limited to, node server failures. Adheres to medical device cyber security policies and procedures in pre-procurement, during system implementation, and throughout the life of the system. Loads operating systems and clinical application software as needed.
  • Investigates, remediates, and documents repairable medical device recalls and safety alerts issued through alerts and recall management system.
  • Maintains knowledge of the state of the art in medical technology, including scientific advances, network protocols, and vendor changes. Focuses on professional development in all areas of medical technology lifecycle management including technical skills.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.

Education:

  • Associate Degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology, Biomedical Equipment Technology or Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related technical field such an Electronic Technology or Information Technology and four (4) years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, or Medical Equipment Repairer.

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology

OR

  • Completion of a military training program in Biomedical Equipment and four (4) years' of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, or Medical Equipment Repairer.

Certifications:

  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES)
  • HAZMAT
  • HAZCOM
  • Certified TEWLS user

Experience:

  • A minimum, four (4) years' of experience related to the work of the position and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties as Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist.
  • Experience includes, serving as a supply chain management leader, responsible for ensuring the logistical requirements of an organization are met, planning coordinating and evaluating various operations to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of a logistics program.
  • Specialized experience includes knowledge of a wide range of sciences including, but not limited to, electronics (analog and digital), computer science/networking, mechanical engineering design, pneumatics, hydraulics, chemistry, physiology, medical terminology, anatomy, optics, and biology to perform duties of a broad scope and nature on complex and sophisticated patient related medical systems and sub-systems.
  • Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours per week for 52 weeks

Skills:

  • Skill in the use of all types of test and calibration equipment such as, but not limited to, digital multi-meters, electrical safety analyzers, defibrillator analyzers, patient simulators, digital oscilloscopes, pulse generators, and local area network analyzers in performing troubleshooting/repair and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Ability to configure and maintain medical servers and desktop computers.
  • Knowledge and utilization of TEWLS, Logistics Modernization Program (LMP), Army Enterprise Systems Integration Program (AESIP), Global Combat Support System – Army (GCSS-A), Depot Standard System (DSS), and Logistics Information Warehouse (LIW)
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Must possess excellent supervisory and management skills.
  • Proficient in intermediate level MS Office software applications such as Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.
  • Need to be able to delegate work to the subordinates according to the changing priorities of the USG and Customers.
  • Ability to perform advanced testing troubleshooting of medical devices involving their interfaces and connections to information systems either directly or through hardwired or wireless networks.
  • Knowledge of codes and standards relevant to safe operation of medical instrumentation such as National Fire Protection Association, Food and Drug Administration, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Joint Commission, and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation.
  • Good organization and training skills are essential.
  • Possess strong problem-solving skills and should be able to maintain good relations with the USG and Customers by communicating effectively and building a rapport with them.
  • Flexible and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Shall have knowledge of various Logistics Systems used at USAMMC-SWA for order processing, storage management, transportation management, etc.
  • Able to recognize and quickly resolve customer issues and work independently.
  • Handle multiple tasks at any time.

Working Environment:

  • Working environment will be 80% indoor, 20% outdoor.
  • Work environment will also be very hot (120 degrees Fahrenheit) due to conditions within the region.
  • Must be able to work rotating shift schedules possibly providing 24 hour day/7 day week coverage.
