JOB SUMMARY
Child Protection is the prevention of and response to abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence against children. Child Protection case management is the process of helping individual children and families through direct social-work-type support, and managing information well. Within child protection case management, there should be appropriate involvement of children throughout the process, as well as full consideration of the best interest of the child.
The position of Child Protection Counselor will be a counseling professional with a formal degree in psychology and or counseling. The position requires the Child Protection Counselor to work closely with the child protection case management team to support identified children and their families through counseling-based intervention. The Child Protection Counselor will also run support groups for children with specific and common issues and protection concerns, as well as train Child Protection Case Managers to run support groups. In addition, the Child Protection Counselor will run parenting support classes and will train staff and volunteers on a range of topics related to child protection, PSS, and psychological support.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND:
- Conduct a risk assessment for clients accessing counseling services and ensure appropriate follow-up mechanism
- Work closely within a multi-disciplinary team to holistically address the needs of each client.
- Provide individual counseling sessions to children, youth, and families/caregivers, as well as
- provide guidance and strategies to reduce risk and promote wellbeing
- Consider the importance of family dynamics on counseling and where possible engage the family in counseling sessions
- Provide counseling with the aim to improve the social and emotional functioning of children and their families, maximizing overall community well-being
- Monitor ongoing care plan implementation in relation to a child’s counseling needs, with special attention to identifying risk issues and communicating these issues to the allocated Child Protection Case Manager
- Conduct caregiver/parenting skills training where appropriate
- Evaluate client satisfaction and appropriateness of care provide
- Develop processes and support clients to define goals and develop a clear and realistic action plan.
- Approach clients from a holistic and multi-disciplinary perspective
- Link clients with appropriate services to support their holistic wellbeing
- Work sensitively with a variety of populations including persons experiencing high levels of distress, persons experiencing different sorts of disabilities
- Conduct awareness activities and engage with the wider community on promoting emotional wellbeing and positive mental health support of other staff
- Where relevant and, as a part of the case management team, contribute and in initiating and reviewing care plans for individual children, with participation from the child and family, helping clients to define goals, plan action and gain insight.
- Provide training to case management staff as requested on good communication skills, identification, and referral to counseling services, Psychological First Aid, and any other topics as needed.
- Support case managers to develop client-centered goals.
- Engage in client case conferencing on a regular basis.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree in psychology or counseling.
- Minimum One year of experience in a similar role
- NGO's experience in counseling and Child Protaction is preferred.
- Excellent Enghlish language.
