Senior Environmental scientist

Job Description

Job Summary
As a KSA Intermediate Terrestrial Ecologist III, you will be a core member of both AECOM Arabia and the Middle East & Africa Environment Team. You will have a passion for environmental sciences, particularly ecology and field ecology. You will be inquisitive and enthusiastic about flora and fauna identification with a particular interest or focus on the Middle East / Saudi Arabia. You will be familiar with terrestrial flora and fauna field survey standards and protocols, their implementation and, where these do not exist yet, their development, and their undertaking over 1-day or multi-day field expeditions as such, you will demonstrate an eagerness for travel, the outdoors, hiking / driving in rugged terrain and various weather conditions and show excitement for working field days closely with other team members. You will correlate the field methods and findings in your analysis with the client's needs and policy or legislative requirements to produce technical reports, summarizing methods, findings, recommendations.
The key responsibilities afforded by this role are as follows:

  • Managing the delivery of proposal and project outputs including – proposal technical and commercial inputs, field methods statements, policies / standards / protocols development where none exist, ecology technical reports document existing baseline conditions / field survey findings / recommendations.
  • Developing and implementing field programmes based on client requirements and / or country/international standards.
  • Undertaking field programmes to collect baseline / existing conditions data on terrestrial flora and fauna, habitat characterizations and assessment, identifying opportunities and constraints to development.
  • Working in partnership with other members of the Riyadh Environment and the broader AECOM Arabia and Middle East teams.
  • Prioritising tasks and meeting commitments on an on-going basis and taking ownership and responsibility for the completion and quality of work.
  • Ensuring that health and safety issues are embedded in project delivery from the outset.
  • Identifying opportunities to mentor team members and providing guidance and coaching.
  • Fully qualified scientist. Utilizes scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
  • Requires general familiarity within a broad field of scientific knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other disciplines/fields.
  • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
  • Solves problems by use of combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments.
  • Participates in planning required to achieve prescribed objectives.
  • Conducts analysis and investigation work obtained from a variety of sources.
  • Performs inspections and tests to ensure compliance.
  • Participates in developing corrective measures and procedures. Formulates hypothesis, performs research and makes recommendation.

Skills

  • You'll need to be self-motivated, enthusiastic and ambitious, as well as having:
  • Terrestrial flora and fauna identification skills, particularly species of the Middle East / Saudi Arabia.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct field work over several days in outdoor conditions, either as part of a team or leading a team of field ecologists.
  • Eagerness to work with teams comprised of diverse backgrounds and skillsets: opportunity-oriented mindset and attitude.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in facing uncertainty or changes in plans: client- and solutions-oriented attitude.
  • Familiarity with Saudi Arabia's Environmental Regulations / Standards and experience in liaising with ministries/clients (such as MEWA, Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, ARAMCO, NEOM, NCEC, PIF, GAMEP, etc.).
  • The ability to lead and work collaboratively as part of an established team, supervising members of staff as applicable.
  • Excellent verbal and report writing skills, including technical reviewing – all with an attention to detail.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and budget constraints, working flexibly under pressure and responding to changing project and programme demands.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to structure and prioritise the delivery of project outputs effectively while working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Willingness to travel.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years working experience.
  • Valid full drivers licence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate and/or post-graduate degree in relevant ecology and/or environmental disciplines.
