BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The Internal Communications Officer will report to the Head of Internal Communications and Engagement to ensure timely and consistent communication and engagement between all staff within the RBC and region.

The incumbent will independently lead on the improvement and development of a range of communication channels, including Yammer, WFP’s social enterprise platform, ensuring it is fully embedded into daily working life and it provides an effective two-way flow of information with employees.

The incumbent will further develop other communication channels such as RBC Central, our regional intranet, which will enable employees to connect to and access information more easily, share knowledge and experience, and feel more engaged in what is going on across the whole of RBC and the region.

The incumbent will have responsibility for developing an engaged community of employee groups both in person and online, promoting a positive workplace culture by communicating outcomes of our Global Staff Survey (GSS) Action plan and leading implementation of Respect+ campaign.

The incumbent will have responsibility for aligning the global and regional internal calendar and content plan for internal communications in line with strategic and operational requirements.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  1. Develops, maintains and updates an appropriate work plan for RBC internal communications, which implements the Transformation communications strategy across RBC and Country Offices, in order to maintain and enhance the visibility and reputation of WFP in the region, and support staff engagement activities, ensuring alignment with WFP strategy. Supports change management process and in collaboration with management and external learning & development experts, builds capability of senior leadership on leading organizations through transition.
  2. Plans, manages and evaluates internal communications campaigns that favourably impact the views and behaviours of staff, leaders and managers in order to support WFP’s strategic direction and promote positive workplace culture.
  3. Produces communications collateral and be an innovative, dynamic and creative content generator across multiple platforms and channels, with the goal of conveying the desired message to targeted audience(s).
  4. Defines an internal social media plan for Yammer and Intranet for RBC and the region which ensures that internal comms is commuted to employees in a clear, timely and effective manner.
  5. Tracks and analyses internal communications and engagement, to identify trends and/or issues, and propose solutions and ideas to improve the effectiveness of communication strategy and activities.
  6. Establishes clear communication action plans, schedules, milestones and calendars to support internal comms that help culture, drive engagement and deliver results.
  7. Plans and executes regular engagement events which encourage two-way dialogue between management and employees, as well as colleagues in different teams to encourage knowledge sharing.
  8. Plans for and supports the online and internal communications activities of the five strategic opportunities.
  9. Leads communication on the Global Staff Survey (GSS) outcomes and initiatives, facilitates engagement with management and staff and assists with roll-out of Respect+ campaign for bureau
  10. Conducts regular surveys and use website metrics to measure staff’s satisfaction as well as know their needs with regards to internal communications tools and services.
  11. Oversees the management of the design, production and curation of WFP visibility materials for internal use.
  12. Builds capacity in region on all aspects of internal relations communication, providing advice, guidance and training to ensure consistent, quality communications activities that deliver the desired impact.
  13. Coordinates and prepare accurate and timely reporting on communications activities that enables informed decision-making, evaluation of objectives and consistency of information presented to leadership and management teams.
  14. Manages junior communications team members, develops work plans, monitors performance against objectives and ensure appropriate development to enable high performance.
  15. Other as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Advanced University degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.

Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years of relevant post graduate professional experience in communications.
  • Experience in specialised internal communications practices and its application to all activities
  • Experience in managing small teams of staff with related areas of expertise in the delivery of innovative communications projects
  • Experience in providing support in leading projects and input into function policies

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills as well as the journalistic ability to source stories from employees.
  • A team-player who can work well independently and within a matrix team structure and has great interpersonal abilities.
  • Proactive and highly organized, with strong time management and planning skills.
  • Able to meet tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure.
  • Is technology savvy, with a working knowledge of MS tools.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of WFP’s corporate culture, the United Nations and the UN system in general is desirable.

Languages:

Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic.
